Asphalt Batching Plant Types and Components:

- Cold aggregate bins: Cold aggregate bins are for feeding cold aggregates and sand into separate bins. They are mostly four or five. Depending on the customer’s requirement and mix material design of the hot mix asphalt they can be more in number. The flow of the aggregates and sand from each of the bin is controlled by a variable speed drive motor.
- Primary vibrating screen: This is a small single deck vibrating screen. It is located at the end of the feeder bin. It will block the larger aggregate sizes to enter the drum.
- Slinger conveyor: After the screening process, the aggregates get onto the slinger (charging conveyor). They get transferred into the cylindrical drying drum via this conveyor belt.
- Drying drum: A cylindrical drum unit for the aggregates drying process is called the drying drum. It is equipped with a burner system for heat flow. The job of the inclined drum unit if to evenly heat the aggregates and bring down the moisture content. If this process is done correctly, the moisture content of the aggregates will come down. This will help the aggregates to coat with the bitumen properly.
- Bag filter: A dry type pollution control device. It is very effective, and can trap fine dust. It does not require any water for pollution control. There are a number of bags with the filter unit which will help in trapping the dust. The pre-separator or cyclone separator will trap all the heavy dust before they enter the bag house.
- Hot aggregate elevator: Hot aggregate elevator is an important component connecting the drum to the tower unit. It will take all the aggregates form the drum to the vibrating screen on top of the tower unit. It has a number of buckets to take the aggregates to the top.
- Tower unit for the hot asphalt batch plant: The tower unit house many components of the asphalt plant. Some of the components that it holds are on top of each other. The topmost component being the vibrating screen. It is a multideck screening unit to receive the aggregates from the hot aggregate elevator. Once the aggregates are through the vibrating screen they will be separated as per their sizes. After this they will be stored into different compartments called as hot bins. The hot bins only temporarily store the aggregates prior to discharge into the mixing unit. As the aggregates are getting weighed, bitumen and filler material will also be weighed prior to discharge into the mixing unit. The mixing unit is a pug mill type mixer to receive the aggregates, bitumen and filler material for mixing. It is an important component of the asphalt plant. The end product can be stored into silo or discharged into waiting trucks.
- Bitumen storage tanks: Bitumen storage and transfer tanks are an important component of the equipment. It’s job is to heat and store required quantity of bitumen. The tanks are equipped with heating mechanism for keeping the bitumen in liquid condition. If bitumen is kept in liquid condition, it can flow freely. Bitumen from the tanks will be pumped into the bitumen weighing unit. From here they will be transferred to the mixing unit after the weighing is done.
- Fuel tanks: Vertical fuel tanks of suitable capacity is provided with the asphalt plant. Fuel tank can be one or more depending on the number of fuels to be used.
- Filler addition: Filler acts as a binder. For filler addition, a filler hopper or filler silo is provided. We can feed the filler material into the silo or hopper and from there it is transferred via a screw conveyor into the filler weigh scale. After the process of weighing, the filler material is added into the mixing unit.
- Control panel: The plant is fully automatic and run from the comfort of an easy-to-use control panel. With some training, any skilled operator can be made to use the control panel. All the important parameters like setting the temperature in the burner and bitumen tanks, choosing or setting the recipes, opening and closing of cylinders or gates, etc. all is controlled from here. All the important daily reports are maintained and generated from inside the control panel. SCADA provided option for online troubleshooting and this feature is very helpful.
